GDNS and net neutrality

2009-12-05
I'm happy to see Google install public DNS. For a long time there has been a lot of loud talk about net neutrality and there have been some amount of political initiatives. But when I personally talk to people (even in IT), they are oddly uninterested in this important topic. Now, it's therefore quite a relief for me to see an actual practical approach to preserve net neutrality.

I totally disagree. Net neutrality is more about Internet providers throtteling network traffic based on protocols and destination networks than preventing users from accessing illegal sites through DNS redirections.
And we all know what Google's interest is? Never ever will I use their DNS services. And everyone who does is far away from understanding net neutrality.

Thanks for the comment!

I really understand the wide skepticism. And it is true that _if_ you decide to use their DNS, you are leaving even more traces at Googles side. I also agree that net neutrality is more than independent DNS.

But DNS is one crucial piece. From the technical side of this: I didn't have a fast and reliable alternative to my provider's DNS up until now. BTW I have quicker replies from Google DNS (8.8.8.8) than from my provider's DNS. This may be due to the fact that I live next to Frankfurt-Fechenheim. Here in Germany providers did (and still do) manipulate DNS queries and I have issues relying on them.

From the political side, I wouldn't try explain my standpoint - since I am somewhat of a fanboy ;) But I do want to say that I mainly base my speculations on their actions and the compare it to other companies. And as I currently see it, network neutrality is a commercial interest of Google.
